FOSSIL DISCOVERED. — Towards the middle of the month of October of this year (1832), they have found in the government of Munster a very important fossil for the antique history of the globe. Two ferrymen from the village of Absen have discovered in the bed of the Lippe, which was extremely low, a bony mass which they had only extracted with a great deal of trouble. This was a head of a mammoth of an uncommon size, in perfect preservation. The four molar teeth were from 6 to 9 thumbs in diameter; the two tusks, one of which was still fixed in the jaw, had a length of 2 to 3 feet; this fossil has been sent to Haltern.
