Online Introduction to

Fabliaux or Tales, abridged from French Manuscripts
of the XIIth and XIIIth Centuries
by M. Le Grand

_____________________________

To add to the Collection of Legends and Tales from the Middle Ages, it is a pleasure to add these volumes. Interesting in their own right, they also include verse versions of some tales already on this site by other translators. Comparison is now possible to judge the spirit and the quality of the translations.

Volume I is now online, along with the notes. The rest will follow shortly, ‘God willing and the creek don’t rise.’

The notes by Ellis, a noted antiquary of the Literature of the Middle Ages are fruitful as well.

Get started with the Title or jump to the first story, a favorite of mine, Aucassin and Nicolette, with proof listed in the notes, and obvious on comparison, of the suppression of some of the best parts, as seen in Eugene Mason’s lovely rendition already up HERE.
